The file is rebuilt from its data: values, formulas and number formats (dates, currencies) are kept, but colors, borders, fonts, images and charts are lost.

Formulas are never touched (so calculations don’t break). If the text you’re replacing is inside a formatted date, number or currency, that cell becomes plain text with the result — it stops being a real date/number (for example, it could no longer be used in a calculation).
